Guest lecture on frugal innovation at TU Graz

Prof. Dr. Cornelius Herstatt was invited to deliver a guest lecture on the theme of frugal innovation at the Institute of Innovation and Industrial Management (IIM) of TU Graz (Graz University of Technology). He was hosted by Prof. Dr. Christian Ramsauer, director of IIM. The audience was an interdisciplinary group of Master students from various faculties. Prof. Herstatt spoke about the increasingly-apparent global need for frugal innovations in both developing and the industrialized world. Furthermore, he showcased an example about how frugal innovation projects can be technologically and organizationally implemented in a multinational company in the settings of economically-developed nations. The results were based on a recent project of CFI with a large international manufacturer of machine and tools industry.

This was the second time Prof. Herstatt visited TU Graz to speak on frugal innovations. There is a growing interest of the Austrian industry in this topic and both institutes (CFI@TIM/TUHH and IIM@TU Graz) intend to collaborate in research, teaching and advising companies.

Invitation to the Concluding Conference in Hamburg: “Potentials of Frugal Innovation”

We are very pleased to invite interested researchers, business persons, representatives of industry associations, policy makers and members of civil society to our conference on “Potentials of Frugal Innovation” in Hamburg, Germany, on 27 September 2017.

The conference marks the conclusion of our BMBF supported research project entitled “Potentials, challenges and societal relevance of fugal innovations in the context of the global competition for innovation.” Partners of this ITA-project are the Fraunhofer Center for International Management and Knowledge Economy in Leipzig and the Institute for Technology and Innovation Management at the Hamburg University of Technology.

Call for Contributions – Scientific symposium: “Potentials of frugal innovation in industrial countries”

Frugal innovations offer high customer value (core functionality, durability, ease of use) as well as significantly reduced costs of ownership compared with standard products and services. The phenomenon of frugal innovations was initially observed in emerging economies and the scholarly discourse still largely focuses on this context. Now there is increasing evidence that frugal solutions are also diffusing in the economically developed nations. It is, however unclear, to what extent frugal innovations are relevant for industrial economies such as Germany in economic and socio-political contexts.

This symposium is part of a larger research project funded by the BMBF as a part of its ITA (Innovations- und Technikanalysen) programme and entitled “Potentials, challenges and societal relevance of frugal innovations in the context of the global competition for innovation”. Project partners are the Fraunhofer Center for International Management and Knowledge Economy in Leipzig and the Institute for Technology and Innovation Management at the Hamburg University of Technology.

Workshop zum Thema “Potenziale Frugaler Innovationen”

Potenziale frugaler InnovationenAm 12. Januar 2016 organisieren wir einen Workshop-Tag zum Thema „Potenziale frugaler Innovationen“. Dieser findet als Teil unseres BMBF-geförderten Projektes “Potenziale, Herausforderungen und gesellschaftliche Relevanz frugaler Innovationen in Deutschland im Kontext des globalen Innovationswettbewerbs”  am besagten Tag in der Zeit von 10.00 Uhr bis ca. 17.00 Uhr im Gästehaus der Universität Hamburg statt.

Neben Fachvorträgen wird ein zentraler Mittelpunkt der Veranstaltung eine gemeinsam mit den Teilnehmern durchgeführte „Expertendiskussion“ im kleinen Kreis von ca. 20 Personen aus Wissenschaft, Politik, Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft über das vorwiegend in Schwellenländern beobachtete Phänomen der „frugalen Innovation“ und dessen mögliche Relevanz für Deutschland sein. Die Veranstaltung richtet sich an relevante Stakeholder aus ausgewählten Bereichen.
